Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

This movie is a chronicle of the ten year long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks until he was killed by Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May, 2011. This was an action, drama, history, thriller based on true events. The movie’s plot centered around Maya, played by an exacting Jessica Chastain, who joins the effort to catch Osama bin Laden and curb the terrorist attacks of al-Qaeda. She was obsessed with his capture and it was through her efforts that the intelligence was discovered that they were pretty sure they found Osama’s location. The film started with some pretty tough interrogation scenes where the CIA was trying to break down people to get information on the terrorists. I eas a little surprised that the President ordered the raid with most of the intelligence community thought that there was only a 60% chance Osama was in the compound.  Maya was the only one who was 100% sure and she was right.

Big Fish (2003)

From Rotten Tomatoes, “Tim Burton directs the fantasy drama Big Fish, based on the book Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions by Southern writer/illustrator Daniel Wallace. Billy Crudup plays William Bloom, a young man who never really knew his dying father, Edward (Albert Finney) outside of the tall tales he told about growing up, making his way, and meeting his mother (played as a young woman by Alison Lohman and in older age by Jessica Lange). During Edward’s last days, William and his wife Josephine (Marion Cotillard) hold bedside vigil as the old man recollects elaborate memories of his youth (in which he is played by Ewan McGregor). Still doubting the the legends and folklore, William makes a journey to meet a mysterious woman (Helena Bonham Carter) from whom Edward had bought property. Steve Buscemi and Danny De Vito also star.”  This adventure, drama, fantasy movie features a great cast and very good acting,  It was fun to watch how the son learned that his father’s tall tales were all based on fact with some exaggerations.  This was a great fun story that is well worth watching.

Dexter (Season 7, Episode 9) “Helter Skelter”

From garykmcd on IMBD, “Isaak Sirko learns that the Koshka Brotherhood has sent two assassins toMiamito eliminate him. Surprisingly he turns to Dexter with a proposition: help him eliminate the assassins in return for his life. Dexter’s not too keen on the proposal and turns him down. Isaak acquires a trump card however: he’s taken Hannah hostage and now offers him her life as well. Dexter also has to deal with Deb who is embarrassed by her earlier admission to Dexter that she’s in love with him. Hannah meanwhile keeps trying to get Dexter to open up to her. Captain LaGuerta approaches her former boss with her theory about the Bay Harbor Butcher but he blows her off…at first.”  This was a surprising episode in that Dexter actually becomes sort of friends with Isaak even though he kidnapped Hannah. They relate to each other when it comes to killing people.  Hannah was stabbed and we think she is dead until Deb calls an ambulance after taking the pulse of Hannah laying in a pool of blood.  Dexter really loves Hannaha and it will be fun to see how long they will be together before something awful happens again.

Abraham Lincoln – Vampire Hunter (2012)

The story line of this action, fantasy, horror thriller is summarized well by garykmcd on IMBD; “At the age of 9, Abraham Lincoln witnesses his mother being killed by a vampire, Jack Barts. Some 10 years later, he unsuccessfully tries to eliminate Barts but in the process makes the acquaintance of Henry Sturgess who teaches him how to fight and what is required to kill a vampire. The quid pro quo is that Abe will kill only those vampires that Henry directs him to. Abe relocates toSpringfieldwhere he gets a job as a store clerk while he studies the law and kills vampires by night. He also meets and eventually marries the pretty Mary Todd. Many years later as President of theUnited States, he comes to realize that vampires are fighting with the Confederate forces. As a result he mounts his own campaign to defeat them.”  This movie was well researched and all the key figures and dates are historically accurate except for the vampires. It was really cool how the war with the vampires plays out at the Battle of Gettysburg with the use of silver weapons. The action scenes withLincolnfighting vampires with his axe were very well done with the use of fast forward and slow motion effects. This was a fun movie which I recommend that every vampire hunter movies fans should see.

The Walking Dead (Season3, Episode 4) “Killer Within”

This was an amazing episode that had so much in it, we can only wonder what else can happen in the rest of the season. There was great tension and dramatic character development and plenty of gore. In this episode two major characters were killed and a new baby was born. There were 33 confirmed Zombie killed on screen with lots more shots fired. If you are a Walking Dead fan, this episode was the perfect episode.

Super (2010)

In the storyline written by pn IMBD, “Frank Darrbo is a hapless fry cook. When his wife Sarah falls off the wagon and dumps him for Jacques, a drug dealer, Frank tries to get her back by reporting her kidnapped, grabbing her from Jacques’ car, and wailing for her to return. After watching Christian TV and having a vision, he becomes a superhero to fight evil. He sews a costume, finds a weapon (a pipe wrench) and looks for crimes to stop. He has problems: his wrench inflicts real injury, so the cops want him for being a vigilante, his sense of boundaries is flawed, and Jacques’ gang has guns. Libby, a clerk at a comic book store, becomes his sidekick, and it’s time to go save Sarah. What chance do they have?” I thought Super was a very funny, dark, movie with lots of action and violence especially in the last third of the movie. Rainn Wilson, Kevin Bacon and Ellen Page were great! The final scene with Libby will shock the crap out of you. This movie was directed by James Gunn who will be directing the new movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Dexter (Season 7, Episode 8) “Argentina”

In this episode, Dexter tries to keep Debra in the dark about his relationship with Hannah, but a surprise visit from Astor, Cody and Harrison throws a wrench into his plans. Fresh out of jail, Isaak renews his pursuit of Dexter while Quinn continues his power struggle with the Koshkas. Again it is fun to have Dexter happy again now that he is in a relationship with a beautiful woman who does not judge him. Of course not all is rosy in paradise since he has Vince dodging the police and taking shots at him in donut shops. After seven years and a half season this is still a great, engaging series.

Dexter (Season 7, Episode 7) “Chemistry”

In this episode, Dexter and Hannah’s relationship heats up, which crime-beat writer Sal Price is very interested to learn, so much so that he helps Debra dig up some information on her. Meanwhile, Quinn’s attempts to protect his girlfriend lead to some questionable moves.  It is fun to have Yvonne Strahovski in the role of Hannah. She really steals the show. If you were a fan of the TV series Chuck, then you remember how Yvonne. It is nice to have Dexter  not kill this girl when he has her on his slab. Instead he gets involves in a relationship with someone who he can be open to and discuss his killing passion.
