Oblivion (2013)

According to Universal, “Jack Harper is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living in and patrolling the skies from thousands of feet above, his existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.”   This was an solid, entertaining, old school science fiction movie in which Tom Cruise did a very good performance. This movie had some really good, unexpected plot twists and some amazing visuals.  Also, the full scale aircraft was made so that they could use it in almost all the shots with Cruise.  I was lucky enough to see the aircraft at Wondercon 2013. It was really cool.

Klown (2010)

This is a very funny movie you can watch on Netflix.  The subtitles did not take anything from this outrageous comedy.  The story is about, Frank. who in order to prove his fatherhood potential to his pregnant girlfriend, he ‘kidnaps’ her 12-year-old nephew and tags along on his best friend Casper’s debauched weekend canoe trip.  This move had some elements in it that reminded me of Hangover and it dealt with things that we probably would not be able to see in American theaters.

Evil Dead (2013)

This was the best horror movie of the year that will please the original Evil Dead fans as well as new fans. It was very scary and, like the original movie, it was done with practical effects and not CGI so whe they bury the lead actress alive under dirt, she was really terrified.  I had the pleasure of seeing the Evil Dead panel at Wondercon 2013 and Bruce Campbell was hilarious and the actors and actresses told how scary it was to make the movie.  This is a movie every horror fan needs to see.
